Wool

Due to the extensive sheep farming in our area of Schleswig – Holstein, we are able to carry out a significant wool production operation.

We offer the following greasy wools:

Eider wool has a micron count of 34 to 37, with a wool yield of 64–70% and an average fiber length of 8 to 12 cm.
Merino I is finer, ranging from 27 to 28.5 microns, with a yield of 58–62% and a staple length of 5 to 9 cm.
Merino II is slightly coarser at 28.5 to 30 microns but has a similar yield and length to Merino I.
Geest or Yellow wool measures 35 to 37 microns, with a lower yield of 50–55% and a length of 8 to 12 cm.
Schwarzkopf wool ranges from 31 to 35 microns, offering a yield of 58–63% and a length of 7 to 9 cm.
Coloured wool has a micron range of 34 to 36, a yield of 58–63%, and an average length of 8 to 9 cm.
Schnucken wool, the coarsest type, ranges from 38 to 42 microns, with a yield of 56–64% and fiber lengths between 8 and 20 cm.

This variety allows us to provide the right wool for virtually any purpose – from fine Merino fibers to strong, long-staple types.

Sorting process

Sturm has recently set up a new sorting process including a long (6m), wide (1.5m), moving conveyor belt where the wool is emptied out on. While moving the wool is spread out and controlled for foreign objects, fibres, manure, and straw etc. After sorting, the wool continues up the conveyor belt and then drops into the bale compressor where the wool is pressed into 400 kg bales.

Eider Fleece wool, considered an excellent wool due to the North Sea Climate, is coarser wool (ca. 35-36 micron) and is suitable for the carpet industry. German Merino wool bred in the East and South of Germany remains a fine wool with a fineness of 28 micron.
